What is craniosacral therapy?
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the subtle motion of the craniosacral system, the membranes and fluid that surround the brain and spinal cord. Rather than manipulating or adjusting anything, a practitioner listens with very light touch, usually no more than the weight of a nickel, and invites the body to release areas of tension it has been holding. Because the touch is so light and nothing is forced, it is well suited to newborns, whose bodies are still unwinding from the experience of birth.
It is a complementary therapy. It works alongside, not instead of, your child's pediatrician, and it is not medical diagnosis or treatment. Families often use it to support comfort and ease while they continue regular medical care.
Why parents bring their babies
The most common reasons parents reach out are feeding and nursing difficulties, reflux and colic, unsettled evenings, short or broken sleep, head shape concerns, a strong preference for turning the head one way, and slow or uneven milestones like rolling and sitting. Birth itself is hard work for a small body, whether the arrival was long, fast, or involved vacuum, forceps or a cesarean. Many families simply say something feels off and they want to understand it better. You can read more about the concerns we most often support on the Infants & Children page.
What a session looks like
We start by talking. You describe what you've noticed at home, and I listen carefully, because your observations are the most valuable information in the room. Then your baby stays fully clothed, often held in your arms or resting on a soft table, while my hands rest lightly on the head, spine and pelvis. Babies are welcome to feed, sleep, cry or wiggle throughout; none of that interrupts the work. A first visit runs about fifty minutes and includes time to talk through what I noticed and what to watch for at home. Follow-up sessions are shorter and often spaced about two weeks apart.
After a session many families notice a three-day "grace period": some babies sleep deeply and feed easily, others have a day or two of extra fussiness while their body integrates. Both are normal. More detail is on our FAQ.
Is it safe for newborns?
Yes, the touch used in craniosacral therapy is exceptionally gentle, and sessions are adapted entirely to your child's age and comfort. You stay with your baby for the whole session, and you are always the final judge of what feels right. We do ask families to wait at least two weeks after routine vaccines before booking, so a little body has room to process one thing at a time.
